City Water Provided by the Private Sector

Larry the socialist, a recurring character in my writing (see here, here, here, and here), cannot conceive of how the free market could possibly supply water. He believes that such a service is a “natural monopoly” that can only be provided through the oversight of a central authority. This in spite of the Flint water crisis, and evidence that “every major city east of the Mississippi” is deceiving their residents about the level of contamination in their water. When confronted with the idea of privatizing water supply and taking it out of the hands of governments, he had this to say,

“…we can also not convince every household to set up 15 pipes if there are 15 water providers.”

Many people assume that the best way to protect an endangered species is to pass laws that prohibit people from hunting them. This is not always the case. In fact, many species go extinct before they’re even put on the threatened or endangered species list. Even when animals do go on the list, it is of course, not always guaranteed that they will survive. For instance, the Eastern Cougar was declared extinct on June 17, 2015 despite being recognized as endangered in 1973.

There are several species of animals which were once endangered, but came to flourish under private ownership. For example, the American bison (not to be confused with the buffalo) once roamed the Great Plains in numbers estimated at about 30 million. Over the past couple of years, social inequality, particularly in terms of police brutality and racial hatred has become more and more prevalent in the news. Social Justice Warriors have often voiced their concerns that discrimination would run rampant in a free society, but I wholeheartedly disagree and with good reason. With no government controls, the market would actually cut down on a considerable amount of such blind hatred; if not eliminate it entirely.

Let me begin by asking the audience a question: How many people do you know who actually hate people of a different race, orientation or gender? I don’t mean ignorant people, although I agree that those people do need a change in perspective. Monopolies In A Stateless Society

One of the main arguments against a Stateless society is, “But how can you prevent monopolies from forming without government there to stop them?” The problems with this unjustified fear are manifold. First in our Statist society monopolies, in the sense that we all understand them, are only possible when they are artificially supported by taxpayer money and fiat currency and protected through regulatory capture, rent seeking, and legal immunity derived by protectionist laws. Second, in a free society, monopolies would never form due to diversity of wants, substitutions, and competition. For the same reasons cartels, or collusion between various companies for monopolistic purposes, are equally as unrealistic.

According to Learn Liberty the term price gouging is defined as “raising prices on certain kinds of goods to an unfair or excessively high level during an emergency.” The phrase itself carries with it quite a pejorative connotation of extorting the consumer by gouging out his wallet. As with most economic fallacies this deception is exposed with a simple logical review of the circumstances surrounding its employment.
